Mobile Area Association of REALTORS®

MAAR recognizes April as Fair Housing Month

Fair housing is a critical issue that affects every REALTOR® in the industry. It refers to the principle that everyone should have equal access to housing, regardless of their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status, or disability.

This principle is enshrined in the Fair Housing Act, which was signed into law in 1968, and it is essential for realtors to understand and uphold it.

There are several reasons why fair housing is important for REALTORS®. Firstly, it is a legal requirement. The Fair Housing Act is a federal law that prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing. REALTORS® who violate this law can face severe penalties, including fines, lawsuits, and even loss of their license. Therefore, it is essential for realtors to understand the law and comply with it to avoid legal problems.

Fair housing is essential for building a diverse and inclusive community. When realtors discriminate against certain groups, they are contributing to the creation of segregated neighborhoods and communities. This can have a negative impact on the overall well-being of the community, as it can lead to the marginalization of certain groups and limit their access to resources and opportunities.

Promoting fair housing is not only the right thing to do but also good for business. REALTORS® who understand and respect fair housing principles are more likely to attract a diverse clientele, which can lead to more business opportunities and increased sales. Additionally, fair housing practices can help build trust and rapport with clients and enhance the reputation of the real estate industry.

To promote fair housing, REALTORS® should take a proactive approach to education and training. This includes familiarizing themselves with the Fair Housing Act and its provisions, as well as attending workshops and seminars that focus on fair housing practices. REALTORS® should also make a conscious effort to eliminate any biases they may have and treat all clients equally.

Fair housing is an essential principle that every REALTOR® should understand and promote. It is not only a legal requirement but also a moral imperative and good business practice. By embracing fair housing principles and promoting diversity and inclusion, REALTORS® can contribute to the creation of a more equitable and just society, while also enhancing their own professional reputation and success.

The Mobile Area Association of REALTORS® is committed to upholding the principles of fair housing and providing equal treatment to all individuals in the real estate industry. By adhering to the values of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, MAAR is working to create a more just and equitable society for all.
